Crowd funding for a hydroponic farm startup

From the Roof to your table:  Farming in NYC Sky—sample

By Dr. Eugene Fuler

About Us

NYC Sky Farms is a New York start-up focused on providing farmer market style produce to the New York City area.  The concept is to utilize the rooftop space of buildings to produce sustainable food that is nutritious, delicious, affordable and locally sourced.   We lower the costs associated with food production by the elimination of excessive transportation costs associated with bringing food into the city:  Gas, tolls, taxes, production, processing, storage, and labor costs will be significantly reduced.  We also intend to further lower the costs by using solar and wind power to power our farms, and sell back excess power to the utility company.  We will sell our produce from eco-friendly street side kiosks and cut out any middle men.  This is the essences of today’s new urban agriculture movement: to crate sustainable, environmentally responsible, and equitable food systems.  Another important benefit of this project is in local jobs creation.  We plan to hire up to 10 employees. We will also have several positions for internship in our hydroponic department, an emerging field with a great future. This project will support the local economy in many ways.

Our purpose

Not only is New York City the most populous city in America, it is also the most densely populated City in America.  The 2011  Census-estimated the population at 8,244,910, distributed over a small area of just 305 square miles (790 km2).  With little to no space for commercial farming in NYC, do to its high density, not to mention sky high real estate value,  all produces must be imported.  The solution is in the Sky.  NYC Sky Farms  strategy is to utilize the millions of square feet on roofs of commercial buildings in NYC.   NYC Sky Farms will be hydroponic, one of the most efficient and effective  way to produce food to date.  No just economically superior to traditional farming,  hydroponic produce grow faster, with higher yields, and contain more nutrients.  The greenhouse structure will allow for a continuous growing season; producing fresh beef steaks tomatoes during the winter months.   Here are just a few of the many benefits of the venture:

  • Lowering the temperature in the building, thereby saving energy.
  • May help to lower the overall temperature of the surrounding area.
  • Improve the air quality, as carbon dioxide will be absorbed by plants and oxygen released.
  • The food supply will increase at a lower cost, with a minimum impact on the environment.

Hydroponic Produce

We have commitments from three building owners who have agreed to hosts our roof top farms. The total usable square footage of farming space totals 15,000.  Hydroponic garden can produce over $1,000 annually, per square foot. With 15,000 square feet of farming space we have the potential to produce over $15,000,000 worth of produce annually. The profits from these farms we will expand organically, in a self-sustaining manor.  A few of New York top hotels have express interest in doing a roof top farm.   Several top restaurant are excited about our produce line up, which includes different kinds of tomatoes, Chinese eggplant,  heirloom beets, peppers, Swiss chard, several squashes and pumpkins, English cucumbers,  micro greens, endive, radishes, zucchini, many melons and all sorts of spices and herbs.  Future plans include venturing into other cities nationally, and eventually globally. With your help, we could be coming to your town soon!

Benefits for the building owners include lowering their tenant’s energy costs from the insulation factor created by the roof top greenhouse; tax deductions from the new NYC sustainable initiative; Revenue sharing structure based on the amount of crops produced.

 What we need

We are almost ready to farm.  Zoning, licensing, and incorporating have been done.  We are crowdfunding to bring our project to life and  provide the freshest, tastiest, and nutritious produces to NYC at a considerable value.  We have enough equipment for the three buildings mentioned.  This included the green houses and hydroponic equipments.  We need to raise funds for the following items:

  • $5,000 to build 3 kiosks
  • $45,000 for operation expenses for 12 months.
  • $15,000 for 1 transport vehicle

What we want to give you for your support.
